Import an existing irrigation map

Upload GIS files or CAD drawings of your irrigation system and bring the whole thing onto the Turfile map at once.

If you have existing GIS data or a CAD drawing of your irrigation system, you can upload it and bring the whole system onto your map at once. Everything shows as a preview first, you match each group to your own item types and templates, and nothing is saved until you confirm.

Requirements

  • Formats: Shapefile (.shp, together with its .shx, .dbf and .prj), GeoPackage (.gpkg), Google Earth (.kml, .kmz), GeoJSON (.geojson, .json), CAD drawing (.dxf, or .dwg which is converted automatically), or a .zip containing any of these.
  • Limits: up to 40 files, 500 MB per file, 1 GB total.
  • Item types and templates: the import only offers ones you have already created. Before importing, make sure your workspace has an item type for every kind of object in your files and a template for the piping and wiring.

Run the import

  1. Open the Irrigation section and click Import on the left toolbar.

  2. The Before you start check shows your current item type and template counts. Click I’m ready — start the import.

  3. Add your files and click Upload.

  4. Wait while the files are analyzed, then confirm what was found.

  5. Check the position. Drag the preview, or nudge it with the arrows, until it sits on your imagery. Click Looks right. For a CAD drawing that is not in GPS coordinates, this step works differently — see Position a CAD drawing.

  6. Answer the questions in the Map Import chat. It works group by group: pick each group’s item type, naming, and template. You can also type what you want (“highlight all the valves”, “leave those out”) or click any single item on the map to change or exclude it.

  7. Click I’m all finished. If groups still need answers, finish them or click Leave those out and import the rest.

  8. Click Save these to my map and keep the window open until it says Saved to your map.

  9. Check the map. Click Finish — looks good to wrap up, or Undo this import to remove everything it added.

Position a CAD drawing

Most CAD drawings use the drawing’s own coordinates rather than GPS coordinates. Turfile places a drawing like that near your course automatically, and the position check asks you to line it up:

  1. Click Match two points, then click a point you can recognize in the drawing, then click the spot on your imagery where that point belongs.

  2. Do the same with a second point, as far from the first as you can. The drawing scales, rotates and moves into place.

  3. Drag the preview to fine-tune if needed, then click Looks right.

Good to know

  • Imported items behave exactly like items you placed by hand: logs, issues, filters, inventory and exports all treat them the same.
  • Undo this import stays available in the chat after saving. It removes only what the import added.
  • Start over in the chat header clears every answer and restarts the walkthrough. Your position alignment is kept.
  • You do not have to import everything. Exclude a group in the chat, or single items by clicking them on the map.
  • In a CAD drawing, block symbols such as sprinkler heads come in as points, text labels come in as points carrying their text, and the drawing’s layer names become the import’s groups.

If something’s not working

“No importable point or line features were found.” Usually a shapefile uploaded without its companion files. Upload the .shp together with its .shx and .dbf.

“Couldn’t convert” a .dwg file. Some .dwg files can’t be read. Export the drawing as DXF from your CAD program and upload the .dxf instead.

A type or template you need is missing from the choices. The import only offers what exists in your Preferences. Add it under Set up your workspace, then reopen the group or use Start over.
