Getting the map to volunteers

Hand out the event code and the app-store QR codes so volunteers can open your published event map on their own phones.

Once the map is published you have two things to give people: the event code, and a way to install the app. That’s the whole handover.

The event code

The code is eight characters, shown as XXXX-XXXX. It sits at the top of the Volunteer event panel with a Copy code button.

It’s the only credential involved. Anyone holding it can open your event map in the Turfile app, with no account and no invitation. Expect it to travel further than the list of people you gave it to.

Republishing keeps the same code, so anything you’ve already printed stays valid when you update the map mid-event.

The app-store QR codes

Volunteers read the map in the Turfile app. There’s no browser version, so they need it installed before the code is any use.

Under App download codes you get two QR codes, iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play), each with a Download button that saves a PNG. Put them on whatever you’re handing out: a volunteer sheet, a sign in the car park, the back of a cart card.

Two things worth knowing about them:

  • They point at the app listings only. They carry no event code, so a QR code on a wall grants no access by itself.
  • They never change. The same two images work for every event you ever run, so you only need to download them once.

Putting it together

Whatever you hand out (a printed sheet, a slide, a text message) needs to say:

  1. Install the Turfile app. Both QR codes, or just the one if you know what everyone’s carrying.
  2. Open the app and choose “Joining an event as a volunteer?” on the sign-in screen.
  3. Enter the event code. No account needed.

Ending it

Nothing expires on its own. The map stays open until you Unpublish it in the Event panel, which cuts access immediately, including for anyone who has it open at that moment, and stops the code working. Unpublish when the event is over: a map left published is a public map of your property.
