Add and identify species

Build your property's species catalogue by choosing a known species, typing a name, or letting Turfile identify one from a photo.

Your catalogue starts empty and grows as your team records what is actually on the property. There is no giant preloaded species list to wade through. Every entry is something someone saw here.

Three ways to name a species

Whenever Turfile asks which species you mean, you get the same three doors:

  • Choose from your catalogue: pick a species the property already knows. Fastest, and the default for repeat sightings.
  • I know what this is: type the common or scientific name. Turfile confirms the exact species so the record is precise, and tells you if the name is ambiguous.
  • Identify from a photo: add a photo and Turfile suggests what it is, with a confidence level and close alternatives you can pick instead.

Add a species from the catalogue

  1. Open Species catalogue in the toolbar and click Add species.

  2. Name it by typing or from a photo, then confirm the suggestion that matches. If none fit, reject them and add more detail. A clearer photo or a location hint often settles it.

  3. Fill in the details: a profile photo, the marker colour its sightings will wear on the map, notes, and tags.

  4. Save. The species is now available in every picker.

  1. Open Species in the toolbar and tap the add button.

  2. Type a name or take a photo, then confirm the correct suggestion.

  3. Pick a marker colour, add a profile photo and notes if you want, and save.

Good to know

  • Identification needs an internet connection and can take a few seconds on a photo.
  • Two people who identify the same organism independently end up with one catalogue entry, not duplicates. Turfile keys species by their confirmed scientific name.
  • Identification is rate limited to keep the service healthy. Normal field use will never touch the limits. If you ever see a message that identification is busy, wait a little and try again.
  • Picked the wrong species anyway? You can fix it later without re-entering anything. See Correct a species.
