Opening an event map as a volunteer

This page is written for the volunteers themselves. If you’re running the event, hand it to them, or print it on whatever they hand out, alongside the same steps.

Open the map

What you see

You see the course under satellite imagery, with a chip across the top carrying the event name, or the club’s name if they didn’t set one.

Tap anything the club placed, such as a marker, a line, or an area, and its details open: the name, any notes they wrote, and any photos they attached. Tap a photo to see it full screen.

Along the bottom is a toolbar with five buttons:

• Search: find the key locations the club marked (below).
• Home: re-centre on the course if you’ve panned away.
• Find me: centre on where you are. Allow location access and you also get the usual blue dot.
• Event: the Event Info page.
• Leave: leave the event map.

Finding things

Tap Search for a list of the key locations the club marked: washrooms, water stations, and whatever else they flagged for this event. Type to narrow the list, then tap a row and the map zooms to those spots and leaves them pulsing. A bar at the top tells you how many are showing; tap Done to clear it.

The list closes so you can see the map. Tap a pulsing spot for its details, the same as tapping anything else on the map. The list carries only what the club marked as important; the rest of the map is still there to tap. If the club didn’t mark anything, the list says “Nothing to search yet”.

Event Info

The Event button opens an Event Info page. It carries whatever the club attached to this event, in two groups:

• Documents: PDFs the club published, such as a tee sheet or a parking map. These open in Turfile’s own reader: the document’s name at the top, scroll through the pages, pinch to zoom, and a page counter in the corner when there’s more than one page.
• Links: web addresses the club published. These open in your phone’s browser, outside Turfile.

Tap a row to open it. If a document won’t open, the reader says “Can’t open this document”; a link that won’t open says “Can’t open this link”, with “Check your connection and try again.”

If the club didn’t attach anything, the page reads “No event information” and tells you to use the map and Search instead.

After the first time

You only enter the code once. On later launches the app opens straight to the event map, until access ends.

The map itself stays current. If the club republishes with changes, the map updates.

When the event ends

Access ends when the club takes the map down. There is nothing to uninstall or cancel. Next time you open the app you’ll see the sign-in screen and the note “This event map has ended. Thanks for volunteering.”

The club can also unpublish the map before then, and that takes effect immediately.

To leave earlier, tap Leave on the bottom toolbar and confirm. You can rejoin with the same event code while the event is still running.

Good to know

• No account is created. Entering a code doesn’t sign you up, doesn’t ask for your email, and doesn’t create a profile.
• You see only what the club published, and only for this event. The club’s own maps, staff notes, work lists, and everything else in Turfile are not part of it.
• It’s read-only. There’s nothing to edit, add, or report from the event map.
• The app is the only way in. There is no browser version of the event map, so the code only works inside the Turfile app.
• If you’re a member of the property, tap Leave on the toolbar to come back to the normal sign-in screen.

If something’s not working

If the code isn’t accepted, check it against what the club gave you. If it’s right, the club has taken the map down, so ask whoever gave it to you. Joining needs an internet connection the first time; after that, losing signal just shows the last saved copy of the map until you’re back online.
