Your irrigation setup with Chip

What happens the first time an Owner or Manager opens Irrigation on the web, how Chip sets up your areas, icons, pipe and wire templates with you, and the short tour for everyone after.

The first time you open Irrigation in a desktop web browser as an Owner or Manager, Turfile walks you through setting up your irrigation workspace. Chip, Turfile’s assistant, sets up your Preferences with you by chat, then Turfile shows you where the main controls are, how to add things to the map, and what the other tools on the toolbar do.

Before you start

  1. “Let’s Set Up Your Irrigation Workspace” Click Start Setup. If you don’t have time now, click Go Back to Home. The setup opens again the next time you open Irrigation.

  2. “Already Have Irrigation Maps?” If you have irrigation drawings, maps or files (PDF, SHP or DWG), click Yes, I Have Maps. Otherwise click No, I’ll Start Mapping. Turfile skips this question if your property already has irrigation items on the map.

  3. “We’ll Help You Bring Them Into Turfile” (only if you have maps). Send your files to support@turfile.com and the Turfile team helps you bring them into your workspace. Click Email Your Files to open an email to us; this ends the setup. To carry on with the setup first, click Continue Setup.

Set up your Preferences with Chip

“Start With Preferences” highlights Preferences on the left toolbar. Click it. Chip, Turfile’s assistant, says hello in the middle of the screen, then moves to the side as the Irrigation Preferences panel opens, and stays in a chat window beside it.

Chat with Chip the way you’d explain your system to a colleague. Chip makes the changes in your Preferences as you talk, and you see each one appear in the panel. You can give several details in one message, ask questions, or ask Chip to change something you set up earlier. You can also edit the panel yourself at any time.

Chip goes through the four tabs in order. Turfile switches tabs for you, and the chat starts fresh on each tab:

  • Areas & Holes. Chip asks how many holes your property has, then whether other locations, like a driving range or practice area, are tagged the same way, and adds them to your holes under the names your team already uses. Then it asks for your areas, such as greens, tees and fairways. Click Next when you’re happy with the lists.
  • Icons. Chip asks which models of irrigation heads you have (for example Toro T7) and which types of valves. The Sprinkler Head icon is renamed to your first head model and copied for each other model; the Valve icon works the same way. It can also add other types of items. Click I’m Happy With This to continue.
  • Pipe. Chip asks how many types of pipe are in the ground and creates a template for each. Then, one template at a time, it asks for the pipe’s size and material, a name (for example Mainline) and a color. If your pipe isn’t in Turfile’s pipe catalog yet, Chip can add it. Click I’m Happy With This to continue.
  • Wire. Chip sets up a template for each type of wire you map, with a name, a color and a width. Click I’m Happy With This to continue.

To set a tab up yourself or later, click Skip for Now before you start chatting; once you’ve written to Chip on a tab, finish it with the main button. You can change everything Chip set up later in Preferences. See Set up your workspace.

After Icons, Pipe and Wire, Turfile shows you the main controls on that tab while Chip explains each one: on Icons, adding, renaming, duplicating and uploading icons and changing their colors; on Pipe and Wire, adding, editing and deleting templates. Click Next after each one. This part also runs when you skipped the chat.

See how to add things to the map

When Preferences are done, the panel closes and Chip tells you it will show you a quick demo. Click I’m Ready. Turfile then shows you the real tools one at a time: each control is highlighted with a short note beside it and the pointer resting on it. Click Next and Turfile clicks that control for you and moves on to the next one:

  • An irrigation head: Add to map on the toolbar, then Add object, a click on the map, the head type, a name (use the names your team already uses, like the ones from your central control), and a hole and area if you have them. Turfile points at Add To Map and then clicks Cancel.
  • A wire: Pipe & wire tools, then Wire and a wire template, Start Drawing, Curved, and a few points on the map. Turfile points at Finish Drawing and then cancels.

Nothing from this demo is saved to your map. To add your own items, see Add an irrigation object and Draw pipes and wires.

See the rest of the toolbar

Turfile then opens the left toolbar and goes down the tools you haven’t seen yet, one at a time. Each tool is highlighted with the pointer resting on it, and a card beside it explains the tool with a short animation. Nothing is opened. Click Next after each one:

  1. “Irrigation Inventory” (Inventory): every irrigation item in one list you can search and filter. See Manage your inventory.

  2. “Photo Manager” (Photo manager): the photos your team adds in Irrigation, in one grid.

  3. “Irrigation Issues” (Issues): every open issue in one priority list. See Item details, logs, and issues.

  4. “Irrigation History” (History): resolved issues, completed to-dos and records of past work. See History.

  5. “To-Do Manager” (To-do manager): issues assigned to your team with a due date. See Assign and work to-dos.

  6. “Filter the Map” (Filters): show only the item types, holes and areas you’re working on. See Filter the map.

  7. “Inspection Scheduler” (Inspection scheduler): how often each type of item is inspected, and what’s due. See Schedule and track inspections.

  8. “Export Your Map” (Export map): shapefiles or a PDF map sheet. See Export your map.

  9. “Import a Map” (Import): bring a GIS file or CAD drawing onto the map. See Import your map.

After the last card, “You’re Ready to Start Mapping” opens. Click Finish Setup to finish.

If your workspace is already set up

When someone on your property has already set up irrigation, the next Owners and Managers who open Irrigation get a short tour instead of the setup:

  1. “Let’s Show You Around” Click Show Me Around, or Go Back to Home to see it next time.

  2. “Start With Preferences” Click Preferences on the left toolbar. Chip says hello and the panel opens.

  3. Chip shows you each tab (Areas & Holes, Icons, Pipe and Wire) and its main controls. Click Next after each one. Nothing is changed.

  4. Click I’m Ready for the same map demo and toolbar cards as above, then Finish Setup.

If you stop partway

  • If you reload or close the page during the setup, it picks up where you left off the next time you open Irrigation. During the chat it asks you to open Preferences again and continues with the tab you were on. Chip starts a fresh conversation, but it sees everything already set up in your Preferences. During the toolbar cards it starts them again from the first card.
  • Once you finish, the setup doesn’t come back.
