Map your areas

Draw each area by hand, let Turfile Vision trace it, or upload a file, then tag it by hole and type.

Each area you map is saved with a name, a hole, an area type, and its square footage. Mapped areas are reused across the Area Manager: in the ledger, in prescriptions, and in recurring events.

  1. Open the Areas section and click Add area in the toolbar.

  2. Pick how to capture the shape: Draw manually, Turfile Vision, or Upload file. Uploading has its own short flow; see Upload a file below.

  3. If you chose Draw manually, click to add corners, double-click to close the shape, then drag points or midpoints to fine-tune the edge. Undo removes the last point, and Reset starts the shape over.

  4. If you chose Turfile Vision, click the surface and Turfile finds its edges. Keep clicking to grow the mask, or switch to Subtract to carve pieces out. Click Continue and the mask becomes an editable outline you can fine-tune point by point. The Simpler / Detailed slider rebuilds the outline with fewer or more points, and right-clicking a point removes it.

  5. If the area is split into more than one section, a fairway divided in two, for example, click Add another polygon to keep the shape you just made and map the next section, by drawing or with Vision. All the sections save as one area with one combined square footage.

  6. When the shape is right, click Next.

  7. If your new shape overlaps an area you’ve already mapped, Turfile asks which area keeps the shared ground. Choose for each overlap and the other shape is trimmed automatically, so square footage is never counted twice.

  8. Enter a name (for example “Green 4” or “Fairway 12”) and pick a value in each tag group, a Hole and an Area Type. Then click Save area.

Upload a file

Upload file imports areas you already have mapped in another program: a shapefile (the .shp on its own, or the whole .zip), a KML or KMZ from Google Earth, or a GeoJSON file.

  1. Click Add area, then Upload file, and pick your file. For a shapefile, you can also select the .dbf and .prj files that sit next to the .shp in the same selection; they carry the area names and positioning information when your file has them.

  2. Your shapes appear on the map in white. Files from other programs rarely sit exactly on the imagery, so line the shapes up with the base map before saving. This keeps everything consistent with the rest of your property. Drag the whole batch into place, or use the arrow buttons for one-foot nudges. Reset shift starts the alignment over.

  3. Click Continue. Turfile walks you through the shapes one at a time, and the shape you’re on pulses green on the map.

  4. For each shape, enter a name and pick a Hole and Area Type, then click Save area. Click Skip this shape to leave one out. Saved areas appear in their tag colours as you go.

Good to know

  • Hide areas in the drawing toolbar hides your existing areas while you work. Turfile Vision hides them automatically while it captures the map.
  • Square footage is calculated from the shape automatically.
  • Moving the detail slider rebuilds the Vision outline from the original trace and replaces any point edits, so set the detail level first, then fine-tune points.
  • When an uploaded file carries a name for each shape, the name field is filled in for you; confirm it and pick the tags.
  • Your existing areas are hidden while you import so the new shapes are easy to see. Show areas brings them back if you want to compare while aligning; everything returns once the import is done.
  • Stopping partway through an import (Stop here) keeps every area you had already saved.
  • Only polygons import. Points and lines in the file are skipped, and Turfile tells you how many were left out.

If something’s not working

“Turfile Vision is limited to management or owners.” Your role can’t run Vision. Draw manually, or ask an Owner or Manager.

“Please upgrade your plan to use Turfile Vision.” Your current plan doesn’t include Vision. Manual drawing still works.

“Choose a Hole.” (or “Choose an Area Type.”) Every area needs a value in each tag group before it can save. Pick the missing chip.

“No polygons found in this file.” The file opened, but there were no area shapes inside it: only points, lines, or nothing at all. Check the export settings in the program the file came from.

“This shapefile isn’t in GPS coordinates and no .prj file was selected.” Select the .prj file that sits next to the .shp in the same selection, or upload the whole .zip instead.
