Docs Getting Started

Your first walkthrough

What the walkthrough shows you and asks you to do the first time you open Turfile in a desktop browser.

The first time you open Turfile in a desktop web browser, a short walkthrough sets up your workspace and shows you around the map. It takes you to the Home map and starts once the map has finished loading.

Set up your workspace

  1. Welcome. The walkthrough opens with “Welcome to Turfile!” Click Let’s Get Started.

  2. Basemap (the Owner who set up the property). In “First, let’s find your best view.”, click Mapbox, Google or Esri to see your course on that imagery in the preview. Confirm with Use Mapbox (or Use Google, Use Esri). This step can’t be skipped. The choice applies to everyone on the property, and you can change it later from the Layers widget. See Set up your property.

  3. Invite a teammate (Owners). “Mapping is better together.” has the same fields as the invite form on the Team tab: Email address, Title / role and Permissions. Fill in the email and title, then click Send Invitation. You’ll see “Invitation sent to” and their address, then the walkthrough moves on. To invite people later from the Team tab instead, click Skip for Now. If every seat on your plan is taken, this step is left out.

Take the tour

Seven cards point out the main parts of the screen while an on-screen pointer moves to each one. The last three show the same parts in the Turfile mobile app.

  1. “This is your map.” Click Show Me Around.

  2. “Everything has its place.” highlights the navigation bar at the top, which you use to move between sections. The pointer clicks Irrigation, Bunkers and Trees, and a small picture of a golf hole on the card shows each section’s features: irrigation lines and sprinklers, then the bunkers, then the trees. The pointer only demonstrates; you stay on the Home map. Click Next.

  3. “Meet your toolbar.” highlights the toolbar on the left, which holds the tools for the section you’re in. Click Next.

  4. “Your maps, all in one place.” opens the widget panel on the right, where you manage your basemap and map layers. A small picture on the card shows a golf hole changing from one basemap to another. Click Next and the panel closes again.

  5. “Turfile on your phone.” A picture of the mobile app appears beside the card, showing your map. Click Next.

  6. “Switching sections.” The navigation bar is highlighted, and a line joins it to the section button at the bottom of the phone screen. The picture shows the button being tapped and the Sections panel opening, which is how you move between sections in the mobile app. Click Next.

  7. “Opening tools.” The toolbar is highlighted next, and the line moves to the phone’s Tools button. The picture shows the Tools panel opening with the tools for the section you’re in. Click Next.

Add your first issue

If you’re an Owner or Management and Home is one of your sections, the walkthrough has you put a real issue on your map. “Let’s put your map to work.” asks you to think of something on the course that needs attention.

  1. Click Yes, Let’s Add It.

  2. “Let’s add it to your map.” Click Add issue on the toolbar.

  3. “Click the issue’s location.” The map holds still while the card shows two short animations: click and drag to move around the map, and pinch, or move two fingers up and down, to zoom in and out. Got It becomes available after about two seconds. Click it and the card moves to the bottom of the screen. Then click the spot on the map where the issue is.

  4. “Choose how to mark it.” The issue form opens on Choose a location method. Pick Single point to pin the spot you clicked, or Line or Polygon if the issue covers a larger area.

  5. Line or Polygon only. A card shows how to draw, with an animation of the pointer dropping points:

    • “Draw a line.” Click on the map to drop points along the edge you want to mark. Double-click to finish the line.
    • “Outline an area.” Click on the map to drop points around the area. Double-click to close the shape.

I’m Ready becomes available after about two seconds. Click it, then draw on the map. The panel at the bottom of the screen counts your points and has Undo, Reset, Cancel and Continue. Click Continue when the shape is done. This card shows the first time you pick each one.

  6. “Give it a title.” The walkthrough highlights the Issue title field. Type a title, then click Next.

  7. “Add the details.” The Details field is highlighted next. Describe what you see and what needs to be done, then click Next.

  8. “Add photos or files.” Attachments are optional. Add photos or files if you have them, then click Next.

  9. “Save to your map.” Click Save issue.

  10. “Your first issue is on the map!” Your new issue shows on the map as its marker. Click Finish Setup to go on to the toolbar cards.

This part of the walkthrough can’t be skipped. If you click Cancel in the issue form or in the drawing panel, the walkthrough goes back to “Let’s add it to your map.”

The issue you save stays on your Home map like any other. See Issues and to-dos for what you can do with it next.

Tour the toolbar

Before the last step, the walkthrough goes down the Home toolbar one tool at a time. The toolbar opens with its labels, the tool is highlighted and the on-screen pointer rests on it. A card beside it explains the tool, with a short animation of it in use. Nothing opens or changes. Click Next on each card.

You only see cards for the tools on your own toolbar, so Tech Staff and Staff see fewer of them. Gift Turfile isn’t covered, and neither is Add issue, which you’ve just used.

  1. “Account & Profile” (Account & profile): update your photo, name and title. Owners and Management also manage the property and the team from this panel. See Account overview.

  2. “Whiteboards” (Whiteboard): sketch plans on your map with pens, shapes and colors. Boards are saved and shared with the crew. See Whiteboards.

  3. “Asset Manager” (Asset manager): keep track of your equipment and infrastructure, spotlight an asset on the map, and see what’s due for replacement year by year on the Outlook tab. See Asset manager.

  4. “Photo Manager” (Photo manager): the photos your team takes for the Home section, newest first. Click a photo to open it full size.

  5. “Issues” (Issues): every open issue on the Home map in one priority list. Click an issue and the map flies to it. See Issues and to-dos.

  6. “History” (History): the permanent record of your resolved issues and to-dos, with their notes and photos. See History.

  7. “To-Do Manager” (To-do manager): your assigned work, with due dates. Click a to-do to jump to the job on the map, then solve its issue to close it out.

  8. “Turfile Vision” (Vision mode): click a shape on the map and Turfile outlines it and gives you its square footage. See Turfile Vision.

  9. “Measurement Tools” (Measurement tools): measure distances, areas and angles on the map. See Measuring tools.

  10. “Report an Issue” (Report an issue): tell the Turfile team when something in Turfile isn’t working right, with a description and a screenshot.

  11. “Help & Guides” (Help & guides): opens the guide for the section you’re in beside your map, with articles and tutorial videos.

Get the mobile app

The last step, “Your map goes wherever you do.”, shows the App Store and Google Play badges. Each one opens the Turfile store page in a new tab. Click Start Exploring Turfile to finish. Install the mobile app covers signing in on your phone.

If you stop partway

  • If you reload or close the page partway through, the walkthrough picks up where you left off the next time you open Turfile in a desktop browser. If you were in the tour, it starts again at “This is your map.” If you were adding your issue, it starts again at “Let’s put your map to work.” If you were on the toolbar cards, it starts again at the first toolbar card.
  • The walkthrough has no Skip or Exit button. Apart from Skip for Now on the invite step, each step moves on when you complete it. Once you finish, it doesn’t come back.
